Vintage Somalia

vintagesomalia: Welcome to Mogadishu 1992. It’s always been easy to get arms into Somalia. The amount of bullet holes in Mogadishu is unbelievable. It goes to show you how intense the fighting was in 1991 and how much arms played a big role. They still do today. The country is flooded with arms.

So stylish. Their suits are timeless. If you look at all the old photos of Somalia’s post independence administration. Their clothes were impeccable and they were all very elegant including the first wives. Reasoning, my mom told me Somalia had  a lot of tailors back then and everything was tailor made, diraacs, shirts, pants, suits. It’s not like that any more with China and one size for all shapes.

Anonymous asked: Salam, just wanted to drop in and say I love the blog. It's a fine line to showcase such material and stay politically neutral, yet at the same time not whitewash life back then. You tread this line spectacularly and still manage to capture the beauty and promise of what our nation and people were. Keep up the good work. -Somali sis
